While on a walk today at work, my work mate Lorraine saw this little chap, he/she was about 75 foot away perched on a branch over the river, now I know it's some kind of duck, but this breed I dont know, can anyone help me out on this please, we were a good 3 miles into the woods when we saw this duck, there were 3 in total, what a beautiful bird....he or she was. Hope you like this post....

Mark...this is a fantastic capture of this Beauty!! Perfect detail and color. This duck is similiar in color and profile to a variety here in North America called a Wood Duck...you being in England this is probably a variety that is not over here...gerry

A lovely painted duck. The image needs to be cropped tighter and the duck is a bit too centered but overall it's nice capture.

Beautiful bird ... wonderful capture. A shame that branch didn't fall behind the duck but branch or no branch ... this beauty heads for my favorites. Thanks my friend.

What a grogeous specimen of the Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata). It looks almost unreal - great work. I agree it could have been cropped a little tighter, he deserves more space :)

Why is Phil saying: Ello James ...? LOL
And I knew it was Mandarin duck because this is a variety that we do not have in POland !!!
Good reasoning - feminine ... LOL

Ohh..what a grand find! A real beauty he is, and you've captured him marvelously! From the wikipedia link above, it appears to be a male duck. Kudos!

Very pretty little duckie...what a wonderful find for you..and of course it's a male, that's because the males have all the pretty colours so as to "hide" the bland looking female, but then again, isn't it a great thing? Ahh yes chivalry still exists, even with animals...should be more of that with men eh?
Hmm..well, maybe women look better with bright colours tho..lol
In any case, this is a lovely photo, a very cute duckie..Verena

I have to agree with the crowd that wants to see this cropped in a bit, and I think I'll coax him along into PS with me and see if that can be done, just for my own edification and desktop use. What a gorgeous bird, and you've taken it with such great clarity... ;)

..and now you've got a great start to being a "birder" - as you are already a photog and already have this magnificent specimen to start your 'life list' - you're well on your way. LOVELY photo! ~Mary~

Absolutely incredible little bird. Everything about 'im seems unusual - of course, the coloring; but also that he's a duck perched on a tree branch. They usually seem to like the ground. I too would like to have seen it a bit more tightly cropped. Beautiful capture.

The picture really captures the colors of the bird aginst the green foilage. The bird kinda looks out place though.
