These arches support an elevated train track, shot from an elevated walkway that is used to allow people at ground level to cross to the other side of the tracks, while not permitting them to wander through the arches. Walking through here one day, I was taken by the series of arches and also the way the low sun illuminated the area. I shot this pic from the walkway floor, the lens protruding through the walkway guardrails. I would estimate that this structure dates to the 1920's. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you like this one!

You're right about the lighting, Sharon. It's made for some great color here. And while the architecture certainly harkens to the early part of the 20th century, the spalling you see on the arches, with the steel reinforcing bar showing through the nearest column, is something that happens even with newer concrete structures. It happens when water is in regular contact with cement, water that contains salt, that is. Either this structure is near the ocean or the road maintenance people have been salting the road above a little too much in the winter. We lost an historic bridge here in North Dakota a few years ago to spalling that practically disintegrated the piers. That bridge was built at about the same time as these piers. Spalling became a problem only after a young engineer decided to "fix" the bridge by replacing the open grated steel deck with a concrete roadway. The water and snowmelt was then channeled down the piers instead of passing harmlessly through the grated deck. Hopefully the city will fix the spalling in your photo before the taxpayers have to cough up millions to replace it. If they did replace it, I'm sure it wouldn't have the graceful lines your photo shows. Hey, besides being an elegant photo, isn't this kinda like photo journalism? Hmmmm? ;D

I love the view through the arches. As well as how the light/color changes through each one. You have a nice eye for subject! Wonderful study of light and texture.

Nice shot. Political comment: the dilapidation of this structure is typical of American infrastructure badly in need of repair before it completely fails.

This is a very nice architectural shot, Sharon. I can just imagine this being used in a movie, with some kind of crime taking place in there, with a bunch of thugs or something. Beautiful lighting, color, and angle.

Hello Sharon...By good use of light you have captured some of the “uniqueness” of the arches that makes this picture a pleasure to view....Well done....All the best to you Sharon.................................................Mick.
