This is an early morning shot of a supporting structure at historic Belmont House in Stafford County, Virginia. Although exact records are lost, the main house is said to have been built between 1780 and 1790. This structure could pre-date that by 10 years, judging by this stonework. I think this building was used a kitchen, or perhaps a smokehouse. I liked the contrast between the rough-and-ready stone and the sleek (and clearly modern) fence. Belmont was the home of artist Gari Melchers (who was popular in his lifetime, but now is relatively unknown), and functions as a museum of his work. I came here hoping to be allowed to bring my camera inside...and found it closed that day. It is on my "return" list! Thanks for stopping by and I hope you like this one.

My goodness! The work that was put into those stones! And they all look so perfect, along with those lovely inset windows. It's amazing how the stones at the corners are so straight and fit exactly. I agree with how the textures are with it and with the fence.I looked up Gari Melchers and found his whole name was Julius Garibaldi Melchers, and quite an artist. I always love finding "new" artists(to me). A lovely place and photo for sure.Thanx so much.--Verena

The reason why the sunsets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB

There is a lot of work put into that building stone work is not easy today with all the tools we have, I sure wouldn't have wanted to build it back then.
Very nice photo.

If today's architecture were as simple and solid we'd be a lot better off. I love buildings like this. Great background info. The lighting in the photo is perfect. Good work.

I love that stonework, Sharon, but the wooden fence is a little obtrusive. I have to wonder what the building looks like on the other side, what a shot angled at the left corner would look like.
