This large grouping of the Cholla cactus, is in Joshua Tree, National Park, California. Pronounced "Choya", they are a definite hazzard I inadvertantly brushed against one, while shooting here, and just one of those 5" cones penetrated my jeans, and deep into my upper thigh. I went into my truck camper, and attempted to get my jeans off, but that was impossible, and extremely painful, as I tried ripping them away from my leg After sveral attempts, I managed to get my jeans back up, and went out for a pair of pliers, climbed back in and started all over again. Some considerable time later, I managed to get my jeans off, but still had 60 odd barbs embedded. It was two hours before I got them all out, and almost two weeks before the swelling subsided. A very painful lesson learned

Wow, scary story, but gorgeous capture. Your colors and textures are rich and deep. I love the contrast just within the cactus in the foreground. These desert shots are truly amazing. This goes into my favorites with the Joshua Tree.

I remember they are sometimes called "jumping" cholla because the segments will detach from the plant so easily at the lightest touch. Sorry you had to find that out the hard way. You ended up with an excellent photo however. Three cheers for your persistence!

Ow!!!! Well, I hope you feel it was worth it anyway because I sure do love this photo! It shows the cacti, the variable colors of the desert, as well as the distant mountains. I'd say this is a definite 10!

I feel like I am fading. I've lost the Holy Ground. Maybe there's a chance, that the lost will be found. If you saw a possum on the side of the road, would you too?

This picture has a lot of depth, clarity and is well placed -- therefore very good. I like it a lot! The cactus almost looks furry it has so many needles!

Wonderful picture and as Ian said, a lot of depth and clarity. There is almost a 3D-effect when watching it, very well balanced and composed. The only thing that looks artificial is the color of the sky but in any case a very good picture from you.

I love teddy bear cholla. I can completely sympathize with your cactus story. Many times I have had the experience of inadvertently brushing up against a cactus or cholla while living in Arizona. This is a great photo displaying cholla in its natural habitat.
