When a tree falls, in the forest, and there's no one else there, does it make any sound? I don't know, but it sure lets you know, if you're anywhere near. it. This is PreCambrian Shield country. All granite and limestone, so there isn't much depth to the soil. Trees roots spread out just under the surface, and most find cracks in the rocks, to anchor themselves. Unfortunately, the bigger the trees get, the more vulnerable they become, from their own height and weight.

Glad the circumference isn't that big or they could probably do some damage. Thanks for the lesson and thanks for showing a photo of it.

Funny how one tree can fall over and the rest are just fine. Another good shot, Doug.

A very nice image...excellent clarity & I love the earthtones. This tree looks like it recently fell. The area I live in has a lot of limestone also & occasionally I will see a downed tree on my wooded land or one that is starting to lean. Thank you for sharing.

Doug, I really like this picture. Isn't that red dirt beautiful? It sure stains your clothes though, huh? I've seen trees fall over like that but still have enough roots in the ground left to grow new limbs that go straight up from the trunk. I like the other trees in the picture too. Are they lodgepole pines, or something similiar? It looks like the downed tree is maybe an oak? Isn't the forest awesome? Anyway, I think this picture shows a lot of things that are truly pretty, even in the winter. Great job!

The earthtones really make the photo, and the lesson is much appreciated.

Beautiful!
You can see how the root ball has spread over the shallow ground soil. I dont think it would have taken a great deal to topple that fella because the root area looks quite restricted -like a 7 foot man with size 3 shoes!
Well done!

Thanks Gerry. This area is the beginning of the Precambrian
Shield, and limestone and granite are never far below the surface.
