As I have just restored this ancient photograph of my Grandfather, I decided to give it some exposure. He was a Royal Lancer, in the British forces, and this was taken just prior to embarkation for Africa, where he fought in the Boer war, in the late 1800's. He sustained a leg wound, which never healed, and wore a bandage around his calf, for the rest of his life. I never saw him limp, and he dug a garden every year, till he was in his seventies. He died in 1963, at the age of 83.

A wonderful tribute to your Grandfather.... You must be very proud of him & his accomplishments. A very nice & clear restored image. Was the original also in B / W as well ? I have several restored photo's of my Grandfather, so I hope you plan on framing this. A keepsake you can treasure forever. Thank you Doug for sharing & I love your commentary.

Hi Doug... well I am sure this photo is ancient, being that it goes back to the 1800's. I can only imagine what condition it was in before you restored it. You have done a marveluos job! This work you have done here can only but provide a great archive for your family. Your grandfather sounds like he was a good man....gerry...

This is great Doug. I like his rifle holster slung on the side of his horse. Great heritage to always treasure and I'm sure some amazing stories he could tell. I would love to sit around a fire and listen to him speak of the good hard life.
Thanks for sharing it Doug!

What a wonderful picture. You can see the pride in his face, and rightly so. Top marks for the restoration Doug, a labour of love with great results.

A wonderful job here, not having seen the original I can only assume the usual wash out sections and loss of detail. Also a great photo by some unknown photographer in the positioning and composition aboard a horse, they're usually pretty uncooperative. This is a pretty historic piece, hopefully you've got it to a size you can frame now.
