Detroit's back alleys, 1955. I had given myself an assignment during my early studies in photography. This is one of many I shot that day in the alleys of downtown Detroit, Michigan. That was back in the days when you could walk in an alley without concern for your possessions or your welfare.

Doug, this is a well done B&W. I think it would make a good entry in the current contest. You sure would not want to walk that walk these days. =^..^=Tigs

Detroit might be worse now, but this 1955 back alley shot doesn't make me feel picnicking there. The black and white punctuates the raw power of the shot. However, the "Post No Bills" sign reminds me of easier times. I can only guess what's posted on that wall now. Love the humor of the contrasting messages from the signs. Looks like a good newspaper photo for the Sunday local section.

I'm not afraid of dying. I just don't want to be there when it happens.

Strange sign. If I wanted something publicized I don't think I'd post a notice in a back alley. There must have been more traffic in back alleys in those days, such as photographers searching for the austere. The composition is quite interesting. I'd have expected putting the top of a rectangular sign exactly on the top edge of a photo wouldn't work, but it certainly does.
