This is the last of what's left of what once was a a forty five foot tree. What you see is about fifteen feet from the ground, where a tumor like growth bulges out where the top of the trunk must have died and broken off. I've never seen anything like this, where the bark is cleaned right off, birds have been feasting, as well as other animals. What struck me as funny was the outstretched remaining arm, with a decidedly vertical gesture to it's adversaries. Needless to say, I now have an appointment with a shrink.

It does indeed resemble a hand in a gesture that would be appropriate for a dish of caviar. The bend on the left side is the bend in the wrist and the rounded part on the right side is the fleshy part of the base of the thumb. Nicely lit in amber tones by the warm Autumn sun on this blue sky day. Is the small twig on the right part of this same body...er, I mean tree?

It's one of those things. I didn't see it until you mentioned it, and now I can't see anything else. Interesting shot.

First I laughed at your narrative and then at Cindy's comment. I have never seen anything like this before either, Doug. Hard to believe that the little branch still is intact enough to give the bird to the birds. The lighting caught my eye immediately. Sure does bring out the color and texture of the "tumor". Wondering why you left that little twig in the lower right. Adds nothing to shot and is an easy clone.

Doug - A curious remnant of a tree, gnarled by growth then decay and animal activity. I like the lighting and the tones it created. Thad

Just gonna say 'bout that twig, but Roger beat me to it!!

Good angle, and a great capture...remember all dying nature feeds new growth!..

Interesting and Fascinating thing. It was probably some kind of insect what made the tumor.

The twig is clearly a gesture from a nearby tree reaching out to help a stricken comrade. A good angle in your photo, Doug. Nice textures and colours in the wood. An interesting find.
