It occurred to me that even the sign was taking a rest, and I tried to make it the only item in focus. Never got a second chance as the fella spotted me and suggested I'd be safer out of the yard. This is from 1955, so it's older than most of you :-).

Doug - An oldie image - I was five years old when you snapped this. Relatives of mine lived adjacent to the mainline rails from New York to Boston, and by a small-town rail yard. As a kid, I'd wander around it, into boxcars on the side rail, small engines idled for the weekend, and try to count the number of cars on the freight trains speeding by on the mainline, often numbering well over 100 cars. Perhaps the fellow in this image is leaning against the freight car, but he'll be busy soon when cars are collected for the next run. The two engines in the background display well the transition that took place in the railroad business - in its heyday. The dark tones work well for this gritty rail yard image. Thad

If I could tell the story in words, I wouldn't need to lug around a camera. ~Lewis Hine The Earth without art is just 'eh'.

Probably a Baldwin steam engine (made in Philadelphia). The diesel is an E9 manufactured by the Electromotive Division of GM. They are absolute classics and ran millions of miles pulling passenger trains. Not many left. Wonderful nostalgic image.
