A middle of the night fire in Detroit, from about 3am to 7am. Of course, it was in the mid 1960's, so it's rather old news.I do remember freezing my hands which were wrapped around a cast metal newsfilm camera and had me running back to my car to thaw out every 15 minutes.

Is that frozen water or foam hanging in strips? Looks like it was quite a big fire. Good shot considering the camera and the conditions.

It's a great piece of photo journalism , Doug .
I'm cold just looking at it . I am always amazed at the ice formations from a winter fire such as this . Great post and would make a great challenge entry .

Brrrrr ... what an icy cold scene. I like how you got the fireman & part of the hose ... they have to do their job rain or shine / sleet or snow. Sounds like you had a job to do as well. Like Marsha, I agree it's a great piece of photo journalism. The sepia presentation is fitting for the time as well. Nice work.

I've always thought we should have a photojournalism category here - We could have teamed up when I was writing for the newspaper in the very early days of my career after college but of course I was doing restaurant reviews which was not "hard" news. This is excellent and a scene I see in the Chicago papers almost every winter. Of course one of our major newspapers fired all their photographers 2 weeks ago saying people want video and they will have their reporters take pix with their cell phones. Their have been several protests already and I was in one of them as I was infuriated by that boneheaded move. Your picture proves my point!

Looks like ice hanging down, bet it was hard trying to keep warm with all that around. Good capture.

Hard to believe anything so hot could turn out so cold.
Photojournalism would be a nice category. I have felt that for many years.
I bet you were a great reporter, Doug.

Mom was wrong; if you leave the fridge door open it will cool down the house. Nice work capturing the devastation of the fire Doug.
