1961 - Banks of the Detroit river, and where we used to swim in the 1940's....although it was a few miles upriver and somewhat cleaner. At that time, most of the industries on both sides of the river, (Detroit, USA, and Windsor, Canada) had their factories right on the shoreline. It was convenient for the lake freighters to deliver the coal that fired the great furnaces of the auto industry.

Such a true, but sad display of what man does to our landscape.

This is terrible Doug. No fish can survive in the river if the water gets so polluted. The river Elbe which flows through Hamburg has been cleaned up thoroughly and the fishermen say that they never had such healthy looking catch. The pollution came from the factories in communist East Germany before the unification with West Germany in 1990.

Such a sad shot Doug - they've cleaned up the Chicago river but not as much as they should. Lake Michigan is pretty good but as watchful as Illinois and Indiana are about the lake there are still problems from Wisconsin.

It is so sad what we have done and continue to do to our waterways. Like Kathy said Indiana and Illinois are in a constant battle to protect Lake Michigan .... especially from the Steel Industry in both states . Great post ... very informative.

This is too sad and only too true for me.
Shame on us, the masters at the top of the food chain...
Thanks, dear Doug.

I agree it is a sad sight. I think now-a-days compared to many years ago people are much more conscientious about their environment. The B & W presentation is fitting & sets the mood. Excellent work, Doug.

A great indictment on the times, Doug.
Luckily, laws have been passed that is supposed to prevent this type of pollution. Lawyers have lined their pockets from both side.

The sad part is that they have just gotten better at hiding their waste over the years. An eye-opening scene and good capture Doug. It has a strong visual impact.
