Back then, most families were just spread out within a city or town, and frequently within blocks of one another. Being the first Grandson on both sides of our family, I had dozens of cousins to pose for me while I was studying photography. This is natural light through a very large window, and if you look close it's not very attractive with those catchlights. Today it's easy to fix, but many hours work or impossible back then depending on film size. Natural light is great, and white sheers make it even better. No direct sunlight though, and North light is best.

Doug, I do see what you mean, but for me this is a wonderful portrait of this fine looking boy. I really like the poise, and also the textures that I can see. I think this is very good, given the conditions and not all of the fancy editing programs back then. Tigs♥ =^..^=

Today you could do a lot with this photo in Photoshop. But for an photo from 1955 I think it is very good.

You are right Doug, lighting is so very important. Today we can take any photo & correct any minor flaws it make have, crop, or whatever ... thanks to the many editing programs out there.

A lovely portrait ... I like the boys dark eyes. I'm sure your cousins were delighted to pose for you.

Back in the day the shot was entirely in your hands from light to dark room, Doug.
Excellent lesson.

Stunning portraiture. I liked the narrative almost as much as the shot which certainly looks just about perfect to my eyes. How in the world can any of us be expected to provide constructive criticism on a shot like this?
