I like the oxidized look to the sign as a contrast to the dry sandy desert.

St.Louis to San Francisco!! Gracious. That is quite a trip, even by car...and they did it over rugged country! There must have been a fleet of stagecoaches for the trip to be semi-weekly.

It looks like their service was interrupted by the onset of the Civil War, since it only lasted 3 years, ending in 1861 (Bull Run). What a great image of a piece of history!
