one of the most outstanding historic sea captain's homes on Cape Cod... pictured are the house, and carriage house... the 'structure' in the foreground is the jaw bone of a whale, which measures over fifteen feet in height... the 'turret' on the roof is known as a 'widow's walk'... A plaque in front of the house reads: "Edward Penniman left Eastham in 1842 at the age of eleven to seek his fortune at sea. At twenty-one years he was harpooning in the New Bedford [MA] whaling fleet, and by age twenty-nine he was master of his own whaling bark. His wife and three children accompanied him on a number of voyages lasting up to four years each... Amid a total of seven successful whaling voyages, Captain Penniman returned to Eastham in 1867 and built this resplendent home in the French Second Empire style. It was the costliest house in town, a monument to the fortune he made in whale oil, baleen, spermaceti, and ivory."

Sorry that I haven't been commenting more. Just got lazy? But I did look at most of them. And again, thanks to all of you for your comments on mine. Steve

The ideal angle from which to shoot this picture. The curving drive, the tiny red roses at the left, the old stone wall and tusk entry arch are the old-time soup in which this chunk of history floats. Marvelous!
