we're out on macmillan wharf in provincetown, cape cod... the red building is a museum housing recovered objects from the pirate ship, 'the whydah' which is the first authenticated pirate wreck ever found... originally a slave trade galley, she was commandeered by pirate captain 'black sam' bellamy and his crew... with her, bellamy and crew looted more than 50 ships (silver coins, gold bars, rare jewelry from africa)... then, in april, 1717, the ship was caught in a violent storm off of cape cod, in which she foundered and sank taking all but nine of the 150 men on board and all of the treasure...... 'the whydah' became something of a legend until 1984, when barry clifford, an undersea archaeologist and a cape cod native, found the wreck off of wellfleet... other archaeologists were skeptical until clifford and his crew brought up the ship's bell, on which was engraved, "the whydah galley 1716".... now.... the other structure in the picture is the pilgrim monument, which is the tallest granite tower in the u.s.a. and commemorates the pilgrims first landfall (1620) in the new world...
