there's only one reason these birds are loitering and squawking at stony brook in brewster... the herring are running! this is one of the major herring runs on cape cod, and there were hundreds of gulls that had been waiting for days... the noise was deafening (and the guano was pretty thick too)... on a serious note, the taking of herring for food or bait has been banned for the last three years because the fish population has drastically declined, and it's still unknown what is causing the decline...

Oh my! I remember similar days like this at the Oregon Coast too. The sky was filled with gulls, hundreds and hundreds of them. And it was all due to there being an abundance of little fishies!! And yes the sound was deafening. It was one of the few times I did NOT like their sound! lol But I love this photo of yours. There is such life in it, it's fantastic!! And the movement of the water, wow, you captured it perfectly. These seabirds look as tho they are having one wild party !!! I do so enjoy your photos Mary!! Thank you so much..Verena

I can definitely hear the seagulls (Herring gulls I think). A nice busy picture with lots of activity. Good sense of realism. Thanks for sharing !!!!

This is an excellent capture and a great narrative. I hope they will find out why the population of herring is declining, so something can be done about it.

Great capture of all the different moods and poses of the chatterbox gulls. Lighting is good and you display a real sense of movement in this shot Mary. Now I'm curious about the herring. Good photo and information.
