We're not terribly well educated about these sort of things, but we are led to believe this is a male lizard looking for a companion. (At our house, we call this 'doing the neck thing'.) I feel like such a Troglodyte at times.

I think you are right about this being a courting display for brown anoles. I have tried to photograph this, too, but the shutter lag of my old digital camera has given me zero success. Thanks for sharing this shot.
