More detail explanation here on #1 shot at f5.6 1/800th sec. with a 18-135 at 135mm, center weight metering if anyone was interested of course. All situations are different and not all would apply but close...to get that dark moody look. I'll carry this out in a series maybe to show the different stages as the sun came up and list the Exfile settings as they changed. the fog really does have a major effect to the over all shot. there's four birds here in the distance, one most obvious below the sun, three more above it, that i can see) nonetheless pretty cool and something I doubt I could repeat if i wanted to.

again, straight from the card. Whats most interesting is the color of the sun here. which is why I said I doubt a repeat is possible. did the image sensor detect something like a solar flare or heat difference? I seriously doubt it and the focus dots were not on the sun it self, or that would explain it more. to be totally honest I'm not sure. The best theory I can come up with is the fog that was in front of it cause the yellow top half and maybe that ban in the middle from WB. if someone does know why? list an explanation for us all below in the comments. would be most interesting.

Enjoy :)

just to add: I've shot at the sun too many times to count, never seen nothing like it, also many times in the morning fog... its never happen before, strange!

I see what your talking about Sty, I'm guessing it was the fog that created that, but i'm a beginner when it comes to this type of stuff. Very cool, and I love the shot. tigs=^..^=

I think I'm liking this one better, Chris; in a little closer, atmospheric striping on the sun, trees silhouetted nicely, and you even caught a bird in there. Diggin' it.

Here's another shot that shows a similar 'effect'.

... ...

As to the hows and whys?

Not exactly sure.. but, ima guess..

Light refraction through the atmosphere.

And by 'atmosphere'.. I am including clouds for the linked photo above and for your shot here as well (in addition to any possible 'interference' from the fog).

More to the point.. the delineation of the 'bands' of colours for your image.. I think involved some clipping.

See here: Cambridge in Colour: "Using Photoshop Curves Tool".. and in particular on this linked page; "TRANSITION OF CLIPPED HIGHLIGHTS" (<-- about two thirds down the page).

... ...

I accept cookies for.. ahem.. 'services rendered'.

... ...

Nice shot, Chris.

Thanks, Chris. Not only for providing us with another splendid sunrise capture, but for providing us with some Exif-data as well. I've experienced what you described in your narrative as well. By reading Les's comment above, think he could be right.

PS: I was smiling about Sandi's comment, stating that she's a beginner on that kind of stuff, ☺ ☺ ☺ !

not sure I understood the PS transition explanation, then again its been a long night. that's just a washout fix, from what i got from it. I sure don't want to fix it. nor was the shot tampered with. it is early for me so you have to forgive even typo's or poor grammar at this point of the morning/almost noon.

so Les, not so fast On the Cookies yet!

however, I do except the atmosphere interference, knowing light and how it bends. a closer look shows a little bit of clouds possible, maybe more so the fog and different heavy layers, all of that being atmosphere of course. clouds are basically fog when you think about it. so that makes sense.

now you just might have won your cookies in this manner, Les :) heres how:

The very next day, Sandi(aka rookie?) yeah right! she's no Rookie I have shot with her personally. she shot this location at the same time under the same conditions. except a little more overhead clouds for her, the clouds smeared some of the sunlight in hers! hummm which now back to Les's train or thought.

I do hope she post them. they were very good! ... and a difference in picture style's she used, from mine. again, I custom tweaked one for the reds. she did not.

so between the two of ours, both shootings a conclusion can be maybe made. its hard to get the sun in round form through clouds-fog yes! or light clouds, again yes!

that picture Les provide with the first link...most interesting indeed. so again I owe him some cookies, no doubt.

over all:
I post things like this for discussion: this is good stuff! it helps us all to understand just the little things that can make or break a shot in the field. maybe your head with return here for just a brief moment and remember this discussion. and for that? your rewarded with success, from just a small tweak in the camera, that made the shot, instead of breaking it.

Very nice Sty. I enjoy all the comments and would not venture to guess what causes this or that. Let's just say I enjoy the picture and I'm looking forward to some more. In photographing evening or night shots I run into a slew of quirky things that happen even stuff that I should know better like simply needing to clean my sensor and don't do it. Shooting the sun can really present its problems.

The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB
