Seeing the colors of the cloud to the East and the sailboat I photographed, I rushed to the corner of the Battery to see the actual sunset. I held my camera over the concrete barrier and hoped for the best.
Ted, by reading your narrative, I understand that you've used the concrete barrier as an 'alternative tripod' (😁) . If so, an inventive way to achieve the desired result in difficult lighting conditions. The result is anyhow excellent!
If you think you can't accept something, try to change it. But if this doesn't work, don't be frustrated, but give it later another try. The one who perseveres wins!

With most images like this the colors simply become layers. That characteristic is tempered here because the watercraft, particularly the paddlewheeler, do a good job of breaking up the thin shoreline. All those windows alight in the paddlewheeler add a sparkle of humanity. Nice.
