Captured this sweet Downy with the canon 70-300 IS USM lens at a focal length of 300mm, and shot through a closed window. I find that they do not scare off as easily using the closed window trick.
But as the weather warms up, hopefully I can again shoot out the open window, and not scare them! :)

Nice one Sandi...Why don't you try that lens with the converter..If the weather is bright and you stop up to f/5 you may get auto focus..Even manual focus will give you auto confirm.."The Beep"....R.

Clarity throughout makes this a gorgeous shot Tigz. How often do you clean your windows to keep it this clear? Mine would have the grandsons thumb print of approval.

A marvelous shot, Sandi! Beautiful bokeh, gorgeous colors, and excellent composition. Very nice depth of field, as well. It looks like that lens does a great job, and I can't tell that this shot was taken through the window. Well done!

May I ask if you used fill flash? I'm wondering how you got the lighting so vivid and perfect.

These woodpeckers are a very nervous bunch of birds! Your trick seems to work pretty dang good to get a shot like this. He does look like he is about ready to take off though;) Great clear shot.
