This is only the third Monarch I have seen this year! It's getting late in the season, and was I ever thrilled to spot this beauty at the local park this afternoon, and it's in such good condition.
I used the canon 40D with the canon 70-300 IS USM lens. So far I prefer the canon for the close up shots,and of course the lens has more zoom, zoom.

Another great butterfly shot Sandi. I like the position that the butterfly is in. Nice, clear, and colorful. They probably will be leaving soon. So glad you were able to capture this one.

Sometimes it is the bee that vanishes and now it was butterflies. Very nice capture of the monarch with its bright colours. Sharp focus too Sandi.

I haven't met any Monarchs this year. I did have a run-in with a Baron, well to be truthful a LeBaron, but I don't think that counts. Though he did think he ruled the road. :-)

A very nice capture. I took an almost identical series of shots last weekend with the same lens. Mine are underexposed though and the Monarch looks pretty ragged. The lens has great contrast doesn't it? Your shot here shows that very well. It's also a good stand-off lens that doesn't make you spook the wildlife to get the shot. Even so, I still prefer the 100mm macro & a ring flash for backup light if I need it. I highly recommend that combination, but it will test your sneaking abilities more when it comes to insects. Anyway, good shot and great luck in finding such a pristine speciman. Happy hunting.
