I took a drive recently to Bonneyville Mill County Park, to get some pictures of the lovely Dahlia's that are in a small garden not far from the mill.

I took Doug's (snapshooter's) advice and tried flash fill, and I'm using AV mode now all the time.

I appreciate the views, and comments, and would like to add that I sure have learned alot over the years by the helpful advice from my friends here on Caedes. Photography is a never ending learning process that offers so much for all of us. :)

Very good, Sandi. Just to let you know, with your advice, I have been experimenting with Av and I have also found Tv interesting as well. Especially when using my 70/300. Thanks for passing on the advice you are finding beneficial. We all do learn from one another.

Your settings worked very well here Sandi. I use the flash very rarely outdoors but instead increase the ISO. I have not seen any noise caused by that until now. Beautiful dahlia and very well captured.

This came out beautifully and you have proven to be an excellent student. The light, delicate colors and black background make for a stunning photo. Fantastico!

Did you think I wouldn't critique this shot because of the nice things you wrote. Well, you're right, but only because it's perfect :-).

An excellent flash shot Tigz, the black background really makes the flower stand out, very well done.
Have you thought about manipulating it?

I must admit, I am a sucker for a black background. It really
pops the color and resolution, (all the way down to the glistening on the purple edges of the petals.

This worked out well on this dahlia exposing the beauty and brightness. It is a comfort to work in av mode but eventually you will brave the exciting world of manual mode. It helps to use av mode to use as a starting point for exposure then fine tweak it in manual. That being said I have a lot to learn and by no means a pro. I really like your background which works so well here.
