This capture of that lovely sunset was taken with the canon 40D, and sigma 17/70 lens.

I kept the editing the same so it would be a more even comparison.

? Now I'm most curious of your thoughts on the two.

I think I did the same editing on both, might have missed it by one step. :)

So far the Samsung pics. seem to take less editing, and I watch the sharpening of the images, I have to go with a light touch. Both camera were set at 200 ISO.

You can view the other one just follow the link.

Thank you in advance for commenting, and your opinion of the two.

Sandi - I downloaded both files and viewed in full on my DT. I favor the Samsung pic, which appears to be somewhat darker and moody. The Canon did well too, but you may be missing a step in editing as it appears to be overall, brighter. The sky is more blue and the clouds don't seem to have the definition as in the Samsung. The treetops in the Canon version seem to be sharper. An interesting study on this beautiful sunset. Let's see what others think.....

Well looking at both in large using 2 different tabs so I could jump back and forth - I love the Samsung image with the richer colours

I have to go with the Samsung, too, Sandi. I like the darker picture which seems to suit the sunset better. Were both shots taken on Auto, or did you control the exposure with the Canon?

Sandi, I saw both images again and again as the comparison wasn't that easy. To me both images have advantages but (minor) disadvantages as well. The Canon version has a tad too bright sky while the bushes on the right side of the Samsung version are a tad too dark. See no difference in details, noise, and chromatic aberrations. Finally I have come to the conclusion that I prefer the Samsung version, lol.

Well I must agree with my colleagues on this - I prefer the Samsung - I like the deeper moodier tones. If I didn't know they were taken at the same time, I would have guessed the Canon was taken earlier due to the brighter tones.

I never thought I would prefer a cell phone over a Canon. Perhaps you could set your ring tone to the sound of a cannon.
I do prefer the deeper coloring in the Samsung. I suspect the Canon would out perform in other situations. At least that's my story.

If both were on same ISO then certainly the Galaxy did a much better job Sandi. This is too bright. You will be able to say it better. This must have been a very bright scene and the canon was more truthful but the Galaxy did a better adjustment.

The Samsung with the smaller sensor will always take a darker picture at the same setting..ISO in particular...Your Canon gathers much more light having a bigger sensor..Bothe good pics...R.

Sandi, though the Canon made a brighter image thanks to the sensor, I do like that the sun shows up brightly on the water. I'm just going to be contrary and say I prefer the Canon. Doesn't mean I don't like the Galaxy image. You could have darkened the Canon's image in edit or by simply moving your point of focus in your composition when taking the picture.

Visually the samsung photo is more pleasing to the eye. But the editor in me says I could get more use of the canon photo. A nice view of the sunset sky, Sandi.

Both have their merits but I think I too prefer the Samsung version, partly due to the darker tones and moodier feel...so you got yourself a great camera with the new phone there SAS.
