I removed the first one sorry, but I did a little more editing.
I have been wanting to try for this kind of shot. Here is Tom on the patio giving me the cat eye. :) It was suggested I try using a macro tube with the macro lens, so this is the result of that suggestion. Canon 40D with the canon ef100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens with a 13mm extension tube, manual focus. I appreciate the comments, thank you.

The eyes are in super focus, Sandi. The kitty looks a little sad though. It could be, though, that he is just concerned about what kind of treat he will get for posing! Beautifully done.

As an experiment, it works fine, but it seems rather pointless when you can already focus much closer than this with the 100mm. It just adds needless complexity to what is already a near-perfect lens. In fact, you may have decreased the sharpness by adding another layer of optics. You can re-sharpen in Photoshop, but you've still lost resolution that can't be regained through editing software. If you want more reach for the same magnification, the 180mm macro lens would be a good next choice, but it's quite a bit heavier to carry around. Every bit as sharp as the 100mm though. He's a very handsome cat too, sandi.

The experiment worked well but the subject may have been too big to see any real magnification. Try getting the small hard to see things into a big bold image. Lovely image of your somewhat bored furry friend. Good job. Maybe do just one eye or his nose as a macro.

This is a fine capture my friend. Tom has that tolerant look about him. He will oblige as long as he gets the necessary rub and food. Using the tube probably narrowed the focus directly on the eyes. The eyes are nice and sharp. I would think that your lens would get you good results even without the tube. Good experiment Sandi and good result.
