Yesterday evening I was invited to witness the release of this monarch. My new friend Brenda who is a photographer, and butterfly lover has learned how to look for their eggs, raises them in a lovely butterfly house her husband built for her, and then puts them on their favorite host plants and keeps track of the chrysalis until it hatches.

This protects them from their many predators, and ensures they will become a beautiful monarch. What you see here is one of two she released, this one was smaller, and gave us many photo opts until it finally took flight. This is one of the most wonderful experiences I have had.

We put our hands together, and it walked onto my finger, and I was in awe of the moment, before it took flight.

I decided to pull out my canon t3i, and thought I had everything set in the settings, but it went to default-auto, and this ended up being an ISO Of 3200, so I ran it through a noise reduction,it has been cropped. I used my 70-300, and meant to grab my 40D as well, and ran off without it. :)

Thank you for your comments, and hope you enjoy this one even though I kind of messed up. I hope I will have another photo opt, she has many more to release.

I've never heard of people raising butterflies. I can only imagine the excitement when this Monarch was set free. Thanks for sharing, Sandi.

Lovely shot with the "tame" butterfly Sandi. Few years ago my wife and I walked into a butterfly park(enclosed glass roof)and one came and sat on my wife's hand. I think it must have been the hand cream she had used.

Free and peaceful interaction with wildlife, of any size or species, is some of the best experiences we can have in life. I marvel at the photos and stories of scuba divers freeing a whale from entangling nets, and seeing the whale's joy of freedom and display of gratitude. You may not have had a whale in your hand (might be a tad tough to lift) but the sense of feeling those tiny feet on your skin, without fear, is awesome indeed. In 2010 my wife and I hiked several miles into Montana's Flathead National Forest, to a mountain lake, where I took photos of butterflies landing on my hand, simply because they had no experience with humans and therefore no fear of them. These monarchs your friend helped "raise" were essentially the same, allowing you this thrill. Despite the challenges involved in the high ISO and lens, you did a good job of adjusting it. If your friend does this again at least you'll know what to expect and be better prepared. There's no better teacher than experience.

A beautiful story Sandi and a well done capture despite your problems - I hope she releases many more as I see less and less of them each year.

Sorry to hear about the sudden exposure problem. In spite of that, it still came out very good. And as Nik said, you'll know better what to expect next time.

For a 3200 ISO the shot looks great. That is a cool story and experience you had, Sandi. I am sure you will be getting a lot more super butterfly shots. Well done.
