Here in the Dakotas we call it "Hen & Chicks" because there's usually a mother plant that smaller ones grow from and surround it, much like the barnyard birds they're named for. Sometimes a tall stem will grow up and out of the center of a large one and when it reaches a certain height will spread seeds.
