Yesterday I spent several hours with some photographer friends at Defries garden. That we know of there were two hummers flitting about, and they were a real challenge to capture. They would either be too low, or on the other side of where we were where.

I was using the 70-200mm for the low aperture, but the reach was difficult. I plan on going back with the big gun as I call it and try again, but that one has a higher aperture, and is of course heavier, but I will use the Nikon D500 which I always use these days for this type of capture for the faster fps.

This has been cropped, shooting conditions were cloudy, and had rain, and then heat! I appreciate the views, and comments, thank you.

You still managed to get a sharp focus on the bird. Good one.

Nice shot despite the conditions, Tigs. You seem to spend a lot of time at Defries garden. We've seen many shots of beautiful flowers and flutterbyes. This is a fine shot of those pesky rascals. A helpful tip...put a drop of vodka in early flower. They won't be much flitting.

My experience has been these guys are difficult to capture well, which you did in this pic. Great job!

Beautiful capture Sandi. You did real good. Maybe one day I will attempt a shot of one of these.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

I don't know if this qualifies as "photography", but you can get some amazing pictures. Just set up your camera with that nice Nikkor 105mm on a tripod right next the flower. Select manual focus on the lens and get your shot framed & focused. Use a fairly low f-stop to isolate your subject, then just turn on video and walk away. Play it back full screen on your computer and when you get the perfect frame, freeze it and take a screen shot. Birds are creatures of habit and will quickly ignore your camera rig sitting right next to their food source, but they'll definitely go elsewhere if you're standing there. Wild birds don't like people. Period. This is a way to get around that. My Hummingbird #1 and #2 were done that way. Season to taste and happy shooting.

Extremely difficult situation for achieving a good shot, Sandi, but you've managed to do so. My compliments for that, my friend.
Thanks for this splendid capture!

Looks like he is doing a ballet pose on top of that flower...optical illusion, I think. This is a great image!
