Spotted this Viceroy at a park I visited the other day. They look so much like Monarchs, but have that black stripe, and the bit of white markings on the their wing tip, and it' hard to see it in this shot, but they have a white stripe on their head.

I had not seen any of these this year, till the other day, and then saw several at this park, and also the Calendar garden..

This has been cropped, I was using the Nikkor 105mm lens. Thanks for commenting.

I wish I was a Glow Worm, a Glow Worm's never glum, 'cause how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?

Sharp focus on the butterfly and a good bokeh to go with it Sabdi. Very nice!

Nice shot of the viceroy taking a break on the leaf Tigs - you can really see the difference in their markings as compared to the monarch - both are magnificent - Great Capture!!!!!!!!

I'm not a specialist when it comes to butterflies, Sandi, so I take your narrative for granted. What I know for sure however is, that you've provided us with another great butterfly post. Brightness and details are superb. Simply a 'wowser', my friend!

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Viceroy, huh? I hadn't heard of it and would have thought it a Monarch, even though I shot a Mountain Monarch that landed on my hand when we visited Glacier National Park. It looked a lot like a Monarch except what's normally black on a Monarch is a dark brown on a Mountain. A shot like this (and your identification post) will now utch me to Google-search the varieties of butterflies, to see if I can find out just how many varieties are Monarch-like. As for your photo, Sandi, it think what grabs my eye is that he's so bright amongst nothing but greens and more greens. I would think he'd be a perfect target for a bird that can see color. Your angle on the shot also gives us a classic view of a butterfly, almost as though it was posing for you. The ones we normally see are from just one side, or backlit in strong light, from behind, or with parts broken off the wings. This one is absolutely perfect and should be in a book of butterfly identification. I'm planning on building a butterfly house for both my front and back yard, hoping I can get one of these to move in.

Happy Trails
