This is my entry for the contest - found this Western Lowland Gorilla deep in contemplation - perhaps remembering his original home. The shot was taken at the Brookfield Zoo in the western suburbs of Chicago. I will state firmly I am not a fan of zoos in today's world - they served their purpose in other centuries but with the advent of the internet and the type of wildlife video we have now everyone can see what different species look and act like. I'll get off my soapbox now . . . All comments and critiques appreciated.

The look you captured here is perfect for the contest. Good luck my friend, it's been year since I visited Brookfield. Sad that they have to live in such conditiions, but at least they are safe. Many animals are becoming extinct from our greed.

Perfect, Kathy! Maybe a touch of sadness to be in prision and I agree and think in the same way as you about zoos, so as circus. Here in Brazil it is forbiden animals in circus, I believe in the last 10 years, not very sure when this law went into effect. The photo is super to the contest, good luck!

Get back on that soapbox, Lady! I agree with you about zoos, but I suppose it isn't much different than keeping a cat indoors to keep it from being killed by traffic. It doesn't seem natural all the same. I'd rather see an animal end up in a zoo than in a research lab. Okay, you can have the box back.
These huge mammals are fascinating. Jane Goodall thought so. I like the pose here. Good one for the contest.

Kathy - A wonderful image, a great capture that makes one wonder what the gorilla is thinking in this pensive pose. Thad

I wonder if he is contemplating his predicament? Then again, maybe he appreciates getting three squares and a place to sleep as much as he wants. Very nice shot, Kathy. Good luck in the contest.

Beautiful capture and perfectly done Kathy! The Brookfield zoo was the only zoo I went to as a child. I think I was 10. I didn't see a zoo again til about 10 years ago...out in Omaha. Good luck in the contest!

Sadly zoos such as this are necessary to keep some animal species alive. But it wouldn't hurt my feelings if they went out of business.
A lovely capture of the gorilla Kathy. Very nicely presented. Best of luck in the contest.

He does look like he is contemplating something big! I think zoos have some purpose but only if the animals are treated with the up most compassion. Treating animals bad makes us less than human. Great image and the best of luck in the contest!
