This is one of my Kauai pictures I've never posted before. And you will need to enlarge it to see what I'm describing. This is a very special spot along the east coast of Kauai not known by tourists. You will see two crosses on the left of center. This is a spot used by Hawaiians to returns the ashes of their loved ones to the sea. The spot has terrific ocean action even on a relatively calm day as you can see which is among the reasons it is used for this purpose. Aloha means both hello and goodbye which indicates the circle of life from the water. The fish from the ocean nourish us and we in turn return to the sea to nourish the fish. It is a rather foreign concept to Americans with our sometimes lavish funerals and memorials but it is concept I was particularly drawn to when visiting Kauai and learning of the spiritual beliefs from their ancestors. I've kept this image for 9 years without sharing it and I hope this post doesn't seem too macabre to anyone but it is a beautiful, spiritual and peaceful spot. There is a touch of Orton and soft focus on this as I preferred that look with the subject matter.
