For those unfamiliar with racing, the outrider serves important functions on the track. Besides leading the horses through the post parade, the outrider watches the horses warming up on the track looking for any obvious problems or lameness. If he/she spots a problem they radio the track veterinarian so the horse can be checked for a possible "scratch" ie, horse removed from the race. Additionally the outrider follows the race along the outer fence and watches for any trouble during the race. If a jockey takes a spill the outrider again radios for the ambulance and is charged with rounding up the loose horse who may present a danger to the other riders and horses. It may look ceremonial in the post parade but it is not.

Great close up but I wish he didn't have spurs on. They seem so cruel to the horse! I know I know....its necessary...lol...Wonderful natural shot and I'm loving your narratives girl!!!

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

I wished you had told me all of this earlier I just bet the family farm on this horse. There better be an outbreak of poison ivy so the other horses do a lot of scratching. A nice capture of the horse and giant jockey its carrying.
