This is an Helebore which is a very old genus of flowers. They are written of in ancient Greek literature and were believed to be the poison used to killed Alexander the Great. They are the earliest of spring flowers sometimes blooming in late February or March. They've been called Lenten Rose for that reason but are unrelated to roses. I wanted the editing on this image to have the look of age so I worked with a sepia overlay for a more "antique" look. I value all comments.

Kathy - We have three varieties in our garden, and enjoy them each spring. As they are low to the ground, photographing them poses the challenge of getting a clear shot of the blooms. You did that magnificently! Thad

Your trick worked Kathy. The flower looks old but not withered. Unusual flower and a lovely capture.

As a model agent I agree with our SAS {Sandi Tigs] completely and unreservedly as to the merits and form. Raj's statement is just most accurate: "the flower looks old but not withered" which is great art to create and it makes me reflect philosophically on some people ageing in the beautiful style... I could go on like that forever, so do not let me ! LOL

My reflection applies to animals too - some dogs tend to become more beautiful with age just like Alain Delon whom I found uninteresting as a young boy!
OMG enough!

Kathy, I suppose that the name 'Lenten Rose' is derived from its German name. Helleborus is called there 'Lenzrosen'. Another German name for it is 'Nieswurz' (Sneeze Herb). The Dutch name is rather similar: 'Nieskruid' (Sneeze Herb as well).

Wonderful F² image. Think that I've enjoyed it already for too long now as I must,...hatshee, hatshee ...,sneeze now, lol.

Regards, Cornelius.
