There are about 75 species of smartweed all belonging to the buckwheat family. They thrive along roadsides, wet meadows and marshy areas and grow 1-4 feet tall. They are considered choice foods in the late summer and fall for waterfowl and game birds. This one had a small insect of some type onboard when I snapped the shot.

I can't say that I normally care for this weed, prevalent in my area, but you captured its hidden beauty. Nice lighting and composition and critter!

Outstanding capture with detail and colour, Bravo That's a very interesting weed/flower, I've never seen anything like that here.
