This is a male red lacewing butterfly native to Central India, the Philippines, China, and Nepal to Thailand. The bright colors on the top of the red lacewing tell potential predators that the butterfly has a bad taste and discourages them from eating it.The lacy pattern on the underside of the wings give this butterfly its name. Many of the butterflies at the exhibit at the Chicago Botanic Garden liked to sit on large stones throughout the exhibit or even on the ground. Care needed to be taken when walking about. (My thanks again to Connie (Constance 53247)who gave me a link that helped me find more sources to identify the butterflies I shot)
