Another Saturday night another snowstorm - 3rd weekend in a row. Took this shot outside my terrace during the storm to try my hand with a night shot. I don't generally shoot at night. The birch is being partially illuminated by the rope lights around my terrace and this was taken with no flash. Any advice and comments are welcome.

"Any advice and comments are welcome."

Here's a good good article on shooting at night.. good good overview and concise..

TechRadar | "Night Photography Tips"

Back to your image here..

I like how you composed your shot, Kathy. A strong element, in and of itself.

I will admit, and this is not meant as a slight.. when I first viewed the thumbnail.. thought that this was a manipulation of sorts.

Having viewed full-size/screen and reading your accompanying narrative.. I would hazard a guess that the reflected light off of the birch bark and that of..

"Take some shots and review them on your LCD. Remember this is what your camera thinks is the best exposure, but if your shots are looking too bright, underexpose by 1-2 stops so that they actually look dark!" (Refer to the article linked to above for more.)

Still and with that said..

I like this.

And again, I don't mean this a slight.. but, to my eyes, the abstract nature is appealing and the image is carried by the strength of your composition.

Plus.. I love birch trees. Their bark is amazing.

Hope you are inspired to take some more night shots. This will open up a whole new world for you and your lens.. and for us, your viewers.

Look forward to seeing more. :o)

I think you got some pretty good results since you don't usually do this kind of shooting. Les gave you a good link, and it all makes sense. I hope you will try more night shots. I need to do that kind of shooting more too. tigs=^..^=

Artistic shot! The tree looks almost "ghostly!"

Kathy, I see that the by you chosen gallery is (still) 'nature'.

Hope however that you will change it into 'contest/B&W challenge', because it would be a perfect entry for the Wednesday B&W Challenge (BWC).

Good advice from Les. Think however that because of the severe weather conditions, this was the best possible result, giving us a perfect feeling what has happened that night in your area!

Very well done, my friend, and thanks for the done effort!
