Catkins are the blooms on certain trees. Here's a dictionary definition: "A spike of unisexual, apetalous flowers having scaly, usually deciduous bracts, as of a willow or birch." I took this from my terrace looking towards our little lake and this is from an old white birch tree. When I see the catkins starting to appear I know spring is near.

I know these - we have some near where I live. I didn't know that they are called catkins. Good capture with DOF Kathy.

Kathy, probably not a favorite of people suffering from Hay Fever, but for me, not dealing with it, it's the ultimate proof that spring isn't near but on its top now.
