Can anyone tell me what this is? I included the best possible views to facilitate identification. My guess is some sort of tiger beetle, but i didn't think they were airborne. It was buzzing around my head from time to time when it wasn't eating termites. I attempted to form some sort of desktop out of it in ps so i wouldn't have to upload more than one photo. The colors as well as it's menacing appearance caught my eye. Sorry to all those with scarybeetlephobia..don't look.

Six spotted green tiger beetle. I went through the same thing when I saw them on my land. I only see them along an old rock wall that gets very hot in the summer sun. you got some pretty good shots of it. They move fairly quick. The one of it actually holding an aphid is kind of cool

Can't say you didn't warn me. My name is B.J. and I'm a scarybeetlephobiac. Viewing this full size to face my fears head on and give you some good votes for some nice clear shots.

Thanks for the detective work and nice comments...I actually just looked him up and came across two interesting bits of info for those who are interested..
1. They chase prey down as large as dragonflys mid-air as well as terrestrially(sp?).
2. They temporarily lose sight when chasing prey at high speeds. (They are quite fast, believe me..the little buggers made me jump and duck more than once seeing as how i didn't particularly want one landing on my face.) But this also makes me wonder how they do in fact home in on thier quarry. Hmm.. back to the field tomorrow for some observations.

Nice work, love the layout, each capture has so much detail. Glad to see these creatures are in america!
Got me wondering though, why are these things such a bright, almost metallic green? They must have evolved that way for a reason and I can't think of one?

Cheers........

I like your layout as well. I have no idea what these are. I just wanted to compliment you on the photo. They are so clear and sharp any one with knowledge sure wouldn't have trouble indentifying them. Great work. Pat
