This fisherman was having a great time, altho I don't know if he ever caught anything, it seems there wouldn't be much so close to shore on the giant ocean, but I've always heard it's the fishing not the fish that draws these guys to the water ! I just loved watching the waves that day, there's so much drama and yet it's so filled with peace.

wow verena .... youve come along in leaps and bounds from last year!
your photos are brilliant!

super light sharp nice silhouette (i like the tiiiiiny bit of detail in the ridge of the hat and back of the rucksack being picked up by the light)
dynamic almost dangerous energy of the sea perfectl frozen and yet soft in the foreground and still has lots of fine detail to explore
the eye is lead in by that curve in the wetness of the sand
well composed and superbly crafted!

it really does carry an emotive message

easy 10 from me

Hi Verena, what an absolute delightful scene you have captured here! As usual, you have produced and image that so typifies that beautiful northwest of ours, or I should say yours! I have always said in the past that large bodies of water mesmerize me, stirs in me emotions I love to experience, stimulates visual pleasure and most of all makes me want to be there, body and soul! We, in MI, have the wonderful 'great lakes' you know, so some of these marvelous feelings of 'peace' I speak of, offords me this opportunity at will! There is something about fishing, and as you mentioned, it is the fishing, and all of the above, not the fish that draws people to this place! Nice job, a beautiful photo Verena, the mighty Pacific!! Sincerely, Marilyn

Verena, Actually the fishing is usually pretty good when fishing near the shore like that. Here's the science: Shore break stirs up the water bringing food up from the bottom which attracts the bait fish which then attracts the big fish. Then again you assessment partially correct also..people will fish just to fish even when they don't catch any. Great picture that captures the spirit.

An excellent capture Verena ... let's hope the guy caught a few fish. I love the foamy surf coming into shore & the lighting is perfect. Very nice.

Excellent composition in this shot Verena. The contrast is way over the top but the scene forgives it. I bet this would make an outstanding black and white. anne :-)

This shot has so much life to it, so much drama in the waves. It feels like there should be a story behind it. Another lovely picture Verena!

Beautiful work Vereena. The reflection on the waves are perfect. I envy those who live near the ocean. I love the sound of the waves on the beaches and the rocks.

Yes, it is a very contrasty image, but that seems to add to the dynamic appeal of the ocean. Fishing is a very soothing activity. I agree that it doesn't really matter whether you catch anything or not.

Again you have really nailed this one! The human silhouette standing next to the unrelenting torrent of waves & swell is such a powerful contrast. It is true that its the fishing that draws the fishing.. not the fish in msot cases.. although you would be surprised how many fish there are that close to the shore. great work.

A wonderful warm presentation. That ocean view shows so much power and energy. And the silhouetted man adds some human interest. Pretty pattern to the sand and nice shades of varied blues of the ocean..nice glow and sparkle to the waves. Well done Verena, a stunning view. You sure know how to use a camera! :*)

A nice moment caught well. Shots near the sea often produce unwanted extremes in exposure because of the reflection from the sun, which subsequently pushes the rest of the image towards underexposure. But you've retained lots of good detail in the sand and some of the waves, despite the peaks in brightness. The fisherman at 'work' is a great subject to use. THanks for sharing. My desktop for the day.
