Oviously these deer are called Mule Deer or Burro Deer due to their large mule sized ears. They roam freely in the area in and near Bannack, Mt. Their hearing is very accuted, their ears move constantly detecting every tiny noise around them. The deer have a bounding leap as they jump, unlike any other deer. They will jump and then come down on all four feet. They can actually jump 8 yards and run up to 45 mph. They can completely reverse in direction in one single bound. They have larger feet and can dig for water with their keen sense of smell down to two feet deep.So here in Bannack, they have Grasshopper Creek for their drinking source. These deer prefer hilly, rocky areas to live in and they eat grasses and here in this area there is an abundance of sage, which is probably a wonderful diet for them. They even eat small twigs but are so careful in what they eat, they can actually eat the fruits off of a cactus.THey can live up to 25 years. These are young ones, and very curious as you can see.

These gals are looking pretty scruffy. Looks like U were there in the spring, as they were in the process of shedding their winter coats. Actually, the one on the right might be pregnant.
Nice image, Verena.

Very beautiful capture of these lovely deer! I like how you also gave them the old look. Just hope that they where real and some sort of strange ghosts...

We have Mule Deer here too. Those look like they are shedding their winter coats. Well presented shot Lady V. :o)

The do have large ears. I think there are rabbits in their gene pool. Good capture and the sepia tone adds to their scruffy look. Good post X.

Tick* was here

They are so cute Verena and they look tiny but big ears. Looks like they are about to shed their winter fur. Truly wonderful information you gave us on these cuties & thanks for sharing this.
