This is what is left of the tiny town of Bannack, Mt. It began in 1853, and most of the people who were the for the gold rush, left by 1900. Some stayed on, and in the 1950's there were still a few families there. Now no one lives in what's left, other then the Park Ranger, she lives in a Modular home on the outskirts of Bannack. The Hotel Meade stands tall and there are small homes left with many of the old things from long ago. There is still the school house, barber shop, church, jail, and more. They are kept up, repaired constantly, to the places as protected from the severe winter snows and the summers hot dry sun. It's a most lovely place to go visit. There is Grasshopper Creek, where the gold was panned, and a lovely camping area right next to the Creek. It's so silent there, you hear nothing except the soft breezes carressing the hills. Bannack is a State Park and is near the small western town of Dillon, Mt.(This is also a photo I scanned, please do comment)

I'd definitely expect to see Clint Eastwood riding into this town, Verena.

I have been through Bannack years ago! My Grandfather took me there to pan for gold in some of the creeks. Found some color. a really neat preserved part of the old west.

I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals

This makes me think of the musical "Paint Your Wagon." I would love to have a picture like this hanging on the wall somewhere here. Gorgeous post, Verena.

Have enjoyed your ghost town pictures. I was wondering. With these vertical pictures, have you considered making a triptych of your favorite three?

I really like this, Verena. You have four different levels going on here - the foreground, the buildings, the rolling hills, and then the sky and they all come together quite nicely. The only thing I might have different would be a little less foreground and a bit more sky. I think it would have better balance. Still a great image - very well done -

I love this! I agree with the bit of cropping of the foreground, but it's still great as it is. I'd sure like to visit that place.
