We get to see (and hear) the loons once a year on our annual vacation. I love them! My goal this year was to try to get a decent picture of one. This was taken from a kayak and I was paddling and trying to take pictures without a tripod so I was thankful to get this. This loon was very close and unafraid. I was a bit nervous about taking my camera in the kayak, but the water was very still.

Now I'm curious as to where you spent your vacation...we used to hear loons at lakes in Upper Michigan. Anyway, lovely shot! :)Sherri

Loons are so neat! I would see them in Upper Michigan and was really surprised to find a few of them wintering here in Florida. One suggestion for your photo: selecting the red eye and altering the gamma and saturation would make it show up a bit more prominently.

Wow, fantastic shot of this guy, Hilda. He looks fantastic in that water. The shot is so wonderfully clear.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

Hilda - this is a beautiful capture of my favorite water birds. They carry their young on their backs! Have you ever seen that? And such a call they have - haunting. These are mysterious and wonderful birds and your photo of this one is superb! Thanks for this..... ~Mary~

Great shot, Hilda, and I would have been nervous to take the camera in a kayak, too, LOL!! I've never seen one of these in person, so I really appreciate this great view among the reeds.
