Refer to my recent post Hualalai 1. This beach (Makole'a Black Sand Beach) was created along Hualalai's 1801 lava flow. By chance, the shape of the new coastline and the way the ocean interacted with it created this rare black sand beach. Not enough time has passed to allow the growth of vegetation, and this beach doesn't seem like the best place to lay down your blanket and soak up some sun...but there is definitely something very raw and beautiful here. On the left is the cinder cone Pu'u Kuili about 2.5 miles away. Right of center, about 25 miles away and 2.5 miles in the sky is Mauna Kea. Hualalai slopes upwards to the right, but you cannot see the actual mountain.
