Hi, David, A wonderful photo of a beautiful bird. Love the title, the detail and clarity of the shot, the colors and all things technical. Sure wish I could write like Les.

The reason why the sunsets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB
Subtle must be operative because it is so hard to see any difference between this and the rework, but it is a wonderful shot and the reds are well captured. I imagine you had to be quick to catch him at just that moment.

Caveats?
Well, hope you don't mind, did my usual. Here are the results:
"Uhh I Dunno - rework"
First in line in the editing chair, used Phil's; aka philcUK tutorial "Faking the HDR thing..".
Then, as it appears to my eyes that the focus is a lil' ... lil' soft, a High Pass Sharpening. (Radius at 2.5.)
Upon opening your image/photo here in full size, seemed to be an assist could be employed to bring out some more details (shadows and then, that of sharpening). In short, add some 'pop' to your shot.
Not sure how much you cropped this one, or for that matter the whats behind the EXIF stuff, et al.
Very nice on the colour fronts, as alluded to above. Natural. And the bokeh is quite nice, in and of an element itself.
Good.. good, stuff.
And but of course, thank you for sharing this one with us. Got a laugh out of me and the bird is quite eye-catching. :o)
