No cool place names for this shot, like Bowlees Beck, Shibdon, Talkin Tarn, or even Hamsterly Forest (hamsters running amok in the woods?). No, this is just "Trail Along the St. Croix River."
Something "geometric" for the current contest.
The bench set beneath the oak branches is a nice place to rest in gentler seasons. Just now, it might be a bit cold.
Some winter mornings are better than others.
The view upstream toward Minnehaha Falls. I was fortunate to live nearby as a boy and played here year around. When not exploring the ledges behind the falls, we fished for carp in the pool at its base.
This view of the valley at Afton State Park is normally hidden from hikers, unless you venture off the trail and out to the edge of the cliff where you can look down. This is one of my favorite spots in the park. Taken last October.
Overlooking one of the rose gardens at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum on a late October afternoon.
No clouds in this sunset, just the sun's heat melting a few office buildings.
This shot was taken in a nearby nature preserve in early October, just before the sun dropped below the trees.
I though that I would take a short break from winter this evening and post a couple of photos with some warmth and color. This shot was taken near the St. Croix River valley on a nice day in October.
Or so I had hoped. Aside from producing the fog, warmer temperatures melted a lot of the snow and my thoughts once again turned toward spring. However, Mother Nature is replacing the snow tonight.
Another foggy, wintry landscape this evening. It's about 30 degrees colder tonight than when this was taken last Thursday, with another 12 inches of new snow on the ground.
The character of this lone crabapple tree caught my eye, and it stood out so well amidst the fog.
The weather turned unusually warm this week for a couple of days, which resulted in a dark, wet, gray winter day with heavy fog. Very gloomy, but a very interesting day afield with a camera. The moisture-laden mist and water dripping from the tree limbs made it difficult to stay dry, but I didn't care.
Not a site commonly encountered while out hiking in the woods... unless you happen to be near the Mississippi River. This is a tour boat from one of the paddleboat companies on the river. Several companies run tours in this area on the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers.
The gate is open and the door swung wide in silent invitation, to pass from summer into autumn with just a few steps taken.
A small creek in Louisville Swamp. Part of the Minnesota River Valley.
A bit of early morning magic. Shot at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
Some ragged winter cattails. Shot in May, a few weeks after ice-out on the pond.
Just a bit of grass in the evening sunlight.
