A small bit of shoreline at a local lake, shot near sunset.
The festival colors of autumn make all too brief an appearance. I'm thankful that on Halloween, I can still find a few spots like this.
When the skeletal trees of November cast a stark and melancholy mood on the landscape, and chill, sere winds signal the approaching winter, sit ye here, and rest beneath the sheltering boughs and gentle shade of the audacious maple that holds stubbornly to its green leaves. Sit and savor the memories of warm and sunny autumn days, and contemplate the passing of a glorious season.
The tamarack (larch) trees provide an unexpected bit of fall color. The trees shed their needles after turning yellow and gold.
A splash of orange among a forest of green.
No better time to be out on the trail.
Another look at the old sandstone quarry ruins at Banning State Park. In 100 years, the forest has all but reclaimed what was once a major industrial operation. A bit more quiet and peaceful now.
I'm always compelled to see what's around the next bend. Usually another bend. ☺
Just a few leaves on the forest floor, shot before the autumn sun dried the morning dew.
Another look at the sky slopes in Afton State Park.
Taken in the late afternoon while hiking in a local nature reserve.
Catching the sunlight at the trail head, before heading into the heavily shaded woods along the trail.
A classic and common autumn scene.
A view of the bluff above the St. Croix River. A steep drop down to the river lies just beyond the tree line.
A view of the ski slopes at Afton State Park. This is the closest thing we have to a mountain around here.
A bit of fantasy. Taken at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival.
Didn't see any wood ducks, but the landscape sure was nice.
I've attempted to capture the golden glow of maple leaves backlit by the sun. This shot was taken in the early morning in a grove of maple trees at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
Taken along the trail leading to the Hell's Gate rapids on the Kettle River.
The morning sun illuminating the bright red leaves on this small maple tree.
