Submitted by xentrik 09/20/04 2:37 AM GMT

Announcing the latest contest, "In Print". For this contest, you will submit your artistic interpretation of a quote or excerpt from some printed text. Think along the lines of translating the text to image. This can include, but is not limited to, all books, short stories, poems, comic books, graphic novels, anthologies, novellas, essays, journals, biographies, magazines, newspapers, articles, and obviously, thesauruses (thesauri?).
When submitting, include the quote and source in the image description. Please also read the extra information below.

Teams of two or three are allowed. For team submissions, have one person submit images and list all contributors names in description. Only two submissions per person please, or three entries total from a team. Submit entries to the "Contests->Current" gallery. Deadline for submissions is 11:59PM EDT Monday, October 11. Good luck, and get reading! (Thanks go to Samatar for this topic idea.)

I don't think the image has to have any text on it. The quote should appear in the description, but the image itself can just be an interpretation of it, with or without text right?

Correct, Torque. The image itself doesn't need to have the (or any) text. All we ask is that the excerpt is in the description. Think along the lines of translating the text to image. Typography will be welcome, though. It's pretty open...

There's an emptiness inside her and she'd do anything to fill it in. Though it's red blood bleeding from her now, it's more like cold blue ice in her heart. She feels like kicking out all the windows and setting fire to this life. She could change everything about her using colors bold and bright, but all the colors mix together...to grey. ~*DaveMatthewsBand*~

Same thoughts as Bob, but I would prefer if the superior asked the underling...so here I wait...

Could an entire poem be allowed? The one I have in mind is very graphic, emotional, and would need 3 images incorperated (an interesting manip. job for somebeody beyond me).

It's basically your interpretation. So anything is fine as long as it relates to the quote somehow. Obviously it would be nice if the rest of us had some idea of how, but I guess it can be as abstract as you like.

The question of whether movie quotes are permissible has come up. The answer is that movies are not "In Print", thus, not allowed. Your loophole is that many movies are based on books or short stories, etc, that are allowed. (ex: Lord of the Rings, Spiderman) Find a quote from one of these printed sources, and you're set.

This is the best contest I've heard of yet . . . never had the ability to create any type of image in previous contests, but now I paint a little (I'm an amateur, don't get excited) and I have Terragen, though there isn't much that you can do with that besides realistic stuff which is cool but gets old (deeeeeeeeeep breath) so does anyone know of any other free programs I could get ahold of in a hurry--preferably some I can save on a USB flash or something because my internet is down and I have to use the computers at school (CSU in Ft. Collins, CO) and I'd need to work on my computer at home?!?!?!
Wow, was that really one sentence?
Anyway . . . I have enormous resources for quotes . . . have quote books, collect quotes from anywhere I see 'em: write 'em down or put in Word document (now like forty-some pages) and my family has so many books we have more bookcases than any other kind of furniture and the books are EVERYWHERE like a swamp monster.
OK, sleep deprivation getting to me . . .
ANYWAY can someone help me with the free programs? Or one that could be transferred by CD-R (definitely not a floppy these computers here scream their heads off if you use one)?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I don't think so, I want these words to be important enough for trees to have given their lives for them. The exceptions are things like ebooks from places such as Project Gutenburg, since trees, at one point, did die for these words.

To answer Elizabeth's question, if I am the right person, there are only limited sites with free programs. As suggested by Caedes, Blender is free, but I don't think it is possible for anyone to turn out a successful image from that with such limited learning time, sorry. I have had it for a while, but it hasn;t done me nay good yet... :-) Torque led me to a site with a 3d hidden-image program and a picture-to-text program, but they can really only be used as special effects, not for the actual image, because they need something to start with, and will look plain as a finished product. Many companies have free tryouts on full version software, but be wary of the oens that require credit card for download, because they will bill if you keep it installed too long. This may not be the answer that you want, but I suggest you search online for what you are looking for, try out a program for this contest with your excellent stash of quotes and creativity, and if you like it, consider buying it.

The timing of this contest is critical for me. I could possibly get some interesting photography that may be considered acceptable, but the type I have in mind can only be taken about 3 days a year, and I hope the camera I use won't be unavailable during that time!

Regarding free software, project dogwaffle is worth a look. The newest version isn't free but they give away one of the older ones and it's not too bad. For general viewing, basic filtering and conversions, etc, IrfanView is good. And free.
