Software update on the horizon

Submitted by caedes 02/05/05 3:27 AM GMT

Hi there, I need a little help from the caedes.net horde in testing out the new software features for the website. It is currently set up on the Developer's Site for your perusal. If you want to help, just go there and surf around and do things as you would on the main website. If you find a bug you can post it on the discussion board on that site (not this one). You will probably have to register a username on the dev site before you can access the member's features. Hopefully we can get this tested and put it on the main website soon. Thanks.

I went there hoping to see the new Caedes.net site design. Oh bugger! :c/
I like the drop-down feature for the list of members online.

Yes, is that still going ahead? /\

It would be very helpful if you could list all the changes you have made (or at least the ones you need tested).

Yeah, the new features look good. I like the drop-down list (though there was only me on the site, so difficult to appreciate the feature). The 'before & next' arrows on user galleries are cool.

Agree with Sam, a list of the added features would be useful, as it was hard to see them all, I'm sure I missed a load. Many of the images weren't loading, but I assume that's just part of the dev site setup?

Yes, I would like to include the new site design along with the software updates, however it is still not working well on newer windows computers. I need to either find someone who has the needed knowledge of css and html to do it for me, or I need to spend some quality time in the computer lab.

I'd like to give you a list of new features. Most of the changes are with the 'behind-the-scenes' type of stuff though. There is a new attachment feature for personal messages.

Oh. Well, good to hear it is nearly ready, anyway.

On the dev site there is a text box right down the bottom of every page with some technical sounding stuff in it, I don't think it was there before. I presume we just ignore this and it won't be on the updated caedes.net? Or is it a feature that is usefull in some way I don't understand.

Just some sort of SQL calls by the looks of them. I imagine they are there for some sort of debugging purpose, I wouldn't think we were supposed to take any notice of them.

I gave it a quick run-thru using a Win-XP pro client machine with all the latest service packs and IE as a browser. Basic navigation seemed ok. Most galleries had "shells" for thumbnails but nothing in them. Clicking on the thumbs "opened" the images, but these still were blank. A few galleries, notably astronomy, had both thumbs and images, and these behaved normally. I attempted an upload which failed...some sort of SQL server error. Hopefully you're trapping this stuff. Navigation seemed pretty fast, but hard to tell because there was only one other person on the site.

So far it looks like the biggest bug is with the upload feature. I guess you've probably figured it out already, but there are very few images stored on the dev site in order to save disk space. Also, the speed of the site won't be realistic because it is running under cgi instead of mod_perl (much faster, like the main site). I'm going to see about replacing all the missing images with a default message or something...

Possibly too late for this rev, but I did think of a feature this morning that I would value having. Like most of the other folks who frequent Caedes, my time is limited. As the site grows more popular, the number of posts in new images seems to be harder to keep up with (or is it just that I have less time?). I have resorted to periodically "scanning" the galleries of my favorite 10-15 photographers to find new uploads, and now spend less time browsing the new images gallery. A few other folks have told me they're doing roughly the same.

A neat feature would be to allow each person to create a "favorite author" list. Whenever someone on that list uploads new work, the site would notify everyone who has listed this person as one of their favorite authors. I would not need to know how many times each of my favorite authors had done new posts, only that there was at least one new work by them to be viewed. So you could code this to check for existing notifications regarding each favorite author and not create a new notification when one already existed. After viewing the new upload(s) by each favorite author, I would clear the notification much the same as I clear notifications about discussions.

I realize this opens the door to a whole new set of many <=> many relationships and might generate a lot more work for the server. So if needed, perhaps you could limit the feature to cadre only. Can't speak for others, but I think I'd rather have this than the ability to post two images / day.

Perhaps you could post that on the Dev Site.

I noticed that on the Dev site, you still are using the "Under Vote Warning" which put the warning box there on images if you havn't voted enough. Are you going to bring that back to the real site? Personally i hope not...but I think its just there because you never updated all that stuff...like you still have the World Gallery and all there. Well, i just felt like putting some input into all of this, so i can feel good inside ... =) .....mmm...i'm waiting for that special feeling....

Oh and also, (dont know if you have dont this or not..i havn't been readign up on your upgrades lately) but i think it would be a good idea to fix how the Author Gallery puts the best athours first to last...Because some of those people should not be so close to the front. I hate to single people out, but for example Jojomercury (no offense at all to ya jojo, i like your work too) should not be so close to the front, but maybe d_spin_9 or Si should be on the first page...Know what I'm saying...

ANd I mean, come on, there used to be a day when CAEDES was on the first page...HAHAH what a joke!!! ...lol im just messing. ;)

The author list is ordered automatically. I think it is based on the sum of your c-indexes cubed. Although there are doubtlessly people who others think deserve to be on the first page (and others who don't) I can't see that it will help to speculate.

I know Caedes changed the criteria some time ago to reflect those that had high quality images rather than those that simply had many images. Are you saying the formula should change again?

LOL, question, Caedes? Is there anyway the new site could show which of your work has made it to the permanent gallery, so you could remove images yourself, instead of waiting on the computer...by the way, I ran around in there with firefox no problem...

OK I'm going to ask one of those RTFM questions again for which I have become famous, but here goes. I just went to my "Caedes Control" panel, and I see two columns which appear new. One is the "galleries" column, and the other is the "Rating" column. I've perused the boards and FAQ's and have found nothing relating to these two new features. Did I miss another announcement? The galleries column is self-explanatory, but the Ratings column I don't understand. I hope it's not the raw vote score, because if it is, my images are pretty crappy, and I'd better hang up my six-guns. Can someone explain the Ratings column to me?
