Some quick changes

Submitted by caedes 04/09/05 2:17 AM GMT

You probably noticed that the front page has changed a bit. I finally got around to adding thumbnails for the top new images (TNI). Now I don't want to hear any more complaining about how being a TNI ruins your c-index! =) The TNI are now selected randomly from the top 10% of images (by c-index) from between 3 and 9 days ago (in order for them to get enough votes). They also have to have a minimum of 5 votes. I've also updated the main logo (upper left corner) and placed a cap on the karma which is displayed on your profile. Anything above 1000 karma now shows as "massive." Comments?

Little problem - when I click on one of the TNI images on the homepage, the page loads without displaying the pic or any of the following comments, votes, etc. When I go in to the pic from the users profile, it works. I'm not sure, but I think (hope) it's not just me.

*edit*
Looking at the URLs of each link (the one from the homepage and the one from the user's profile), I've noticed that the value "Zephir.cgi?" is missing from the link on the homepage's TNI display.

Take mayne's "Majestic" for example.

TNI link URL=http://www.caedes.net/?lib=Caedes::Infopage&image=mayne-1112417003.jpg

Profile URL=http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Caedes::Infopage&image=mayne-1112417003.jpg

A few of my images got into the top new images a couple of days ago and afterwards, their c-index plummeted really badly...but I think that now you can see the thumbnails, people will only click on an image if it looks good - because before, you couldn't tell whether you would like the image by its name or not :P - therefore, no one should really suffer this problem anymore :D

yes, it looks excellent, I was impressed as soon as I logged on today. Agree with the Karma cap too. Perhaps we could take it further and have categories - i.e. under 100 is one category, 101-500 i another 501-1000 and so on (or whatever). If this was adopted, the category names would have to be chosen carefully to (i) avoid being condescending (calling people 'beginner' wouldn't go down well, if recent discussions are anything to go by...) and (ii) avoid creating any 'hierachy' by equating them to ranks in any way. Just a thought

Anyway, the front page looks great.

Everytime I return to the home page there are diferent images. I have seen one of mine appear at least three different times in different locaions.If this is a roating slide show then KUDOS as it will allow more images to be displaed. Still the question is how long will an image be allowed to remain on the TNI. Good work, thank you.

No, that image was chosen on a rolling basis from a selection of high-rated images in the permanent galleries by a set criteria. Like the TNI's, it was selected by a script, not a person. The only difference with the new look is that thumbnails are now visible and the single 'Featured Image' has temporarily gone (I believe that Caedes is looking at bringing it back when he has coded it). Also the TNI criteria formula is slightly different, I think.

I'm not keen on that design, DJ, but then again I'm also not keen on having no demarcation between the featured image and the TNI's.

Perhaps Two FI's (vertically) and then the remaining 4 TNI's? There would still need to be titles (as suggested some time ago on this thread). Some sort of vertical border would be required between the two areas too.

I really don't se the point in designating the images with special names. We know that they images are "featured" because they are on the front page after all. The reason that they are featured seems like a detail that the average visitor to the site doesn't really need to know. For instance, what if I decide to put a "lonely" image on the front page so that it will get enough votes. Would I then have to add a caption to the image telling exactly why it was chosen and maybe including the math formula that I used to select it? I'll probably just leave it as is for now.

Going back to the beginning of this post, I would like to point out the minimum of 5 votes to get inclusion....sometimes it takes days or weeks to get more than 2 votes. I suppose it need us as in all the people that regularly comment to make sure we vote on every image we look at regardless of comment or not.

I really like the new site design and also noticed no one had commented on the slight change in the link-to-home image in the upper corner. Adding "Desktop Wallpaper" was a subtle and in my opinion much needed improvement so good thinking there.

Now, duck or you might get hit with a couple of pennies... I was thinking that the images on the homepage serve two main purposes, one is to highlight good images that members might not have seen (both new and old) and the other is to put our best foot forward for first time visitors. In that spirit, what if the images were split three and three. Then you could separate the rows and label the top row "featured classics" and the bottom row "best new images" or something like that.

With the new rotation plenty of top new images get exposure so it seems like 3 would be ok instead of 5. That also gives more exposure to some of the great classics we may have missed or forgotten, and I think that bank of images is probably a better foot to put forward on average since it pulls the cream from a larger crop than the best new ones.

Also, I do think that if lonely images are added they should be identified as such since they are probably not up to the quality of the usual featured images we might present to visitors of the site.

I think the front page is fine as it is...caedes is right...we don't really need to know that the top left image originates from the permanent galleries. In answer to scionlord;s query about votes..I've never really had a problem getting five votes...surely it doesn't take weeks to months on some people's work!? No offence meant, of course ^_^
But what I don't understand is how the *lonely images* gallery really works, because although it's supposed to be for images that *haven't been given enough love and affection* by other caedes members...some of the desktops in there have been featured in the top new images at the same time...and on the odd occasion when my images have appeared in there, it doesn't make sense why they sould because most of the time they do have over five votes and rather a high c-index, too!

I just noticed ppigeon's image "Shimmer" in the top-middle position on the front page. If I recall correctly (from reading most but not all of this thread), isn't the top left one the featured image and the rest are top new images? This image has been around a while; ppigeon gave me permission to use some of his pictures for my church's youth group a while back, and this was one that I used at the time (impying that it has been here a while as well). Maybe I just missed something about the organization of the front page.
