Caedes

AOTW #5

Submitted by Samatar 12/03/05 8:11 AM GMT

Our next Artist of the week is Mayne with a majority of four nominations. As one of the longer term members on the site, he has a large gallery containing some exceptional photographs, so be sure to check it out! Once again we have the privilege of being able to learn a little more about our featured artist, thanks to a bio provided by Darryl as follows:

Mayne: Thank you for choosing me as the Artist of the Week; it is a wonderful honour to have a special place among the talented people who make up the population at Caedes. I am married to Shannon, my companion of 9 years, and we have two dogs, Stuart and Daphne, whom you may have already met on Caedes. They almost always get to join me on my excursions to take pictures and sometimes ruin what would have been an excellent shot by placing their rears in the view at the last second. I love them anyway though. I have also been trying to increase Shannon’s interest in photography, but to little avail. I was born in Campbell River, B.C. in 1969 (Gosh, was it that long ago already??), and spent the first 7 formative years of my life growing up in Gold River. After moving to Saskatchewan, I picked up photography as a hobby in my teens. I was about 15 when I received my first real camera – a Yashica SLR – for Christmas. I moved back to the B.C. coast about 14 years ago, and have gone back to photography in a bigger way than ever in the last three years (wow, since finding Caedes…hmmm, go figure). I am the proud owner of a Canon 20D digital SLR now, and have 4 lenses that go with it, macro, zoom, wide angle and general purpose. I found Caedes when I did a Dogpile search for desktop wallpaper and have been hooked ever since. Everyone and the comments and tips that they give have inspired me to become a better photographer and use the tools of digital enhancement to their maximum benefit. I will never forget Pierre’s first comment on one of my pictures (Westwood Lake); I was so excited that someone had commented on my first image! I can’t really say what my favourite image is…there are so many, and I’m very picky about what I post. It is quite exciting to see the improvements made by artists when they receive feedback, and watch how their pictures get better and better. Thank you again for this honour. You are next! I look forward to seeing each one of you and your biographies in future AOTW announcements.

A well deserved honor, Darryl. I've started perusing your gallery and I could get lost for a month in there! Your photos exhibit a true comfort with nature. Your ability to present the beauty where otherwise it might not be noticed brings a uniqueness to the variety of images seen at Caedes. Congratuations, Darryl, and now, back to the gallery!

Congratulations! I must admit that, to date, I haven't done a careful review of your gallery, but, with this distinction, I just took a long peek and, to put it mildly, I'm incredibly impressed by your work! You are clearly deserving of this "Artist of the Week" award! Wen

You were bound to get the honors, Darryl! You know how much I respect your work. It's almost as much as I'm envious of your equipment. :P You have a great eye for photographic subjects and must have great patience (and live in a very beautiful environment) to find all those great shooting opportunities. I'm always (or at least as a (rather consistent) rule) impressed with your work and in addition to making superb photos you are somewhat of a PS magician... ;)

Hi. I hope Stuart and Daphne at least get a special treat out of this. Shannon even more so. And yes, I liked her eye for a shot and composition and would love to see her share more with us here too. I don't think the joy you have with your photography and manipulation work has ever not shown in any composition you've done. All unique in their own way. Each time (even if it's another mushroom), you give us a new view and an interesting artistic expression of what you see and feel. What I enjoy most about your work is being able to relate to the compositions you put together. They all have a "feeling" about them yet remain clear enough for me to understand your purpose. Your focal point is always evident and ever interesting. So, congratulations from me too! Well deserved. Always, Mom. ;)

Well done my friend. AOTW! What a compliment to your artistic skills. I, too love nature, so I have always felt some connection to you in that way. Even when I first joined this site, your images stood out above others to me. Your love of nature is evident when you share your captures with us......one can feel it in your images. I think my favorite image of yours is the one of Daphne. I could stare at that for hours. I also love all the shots you took in Stanley Park. It's amazing that your poor camera battery didn't run out of juice hehe :~).....the most important one is framed in my office though. I smile everytime I look at it. Quite a capture, that one is, right? I am just glad there were no brown bears around for Shannon's sake!!!!
Enjoy & bask in your week of fame. You have earned it through hard work and diligence, along with lots of trial and errors. . I am quite proud to call you, Shannon , Daphne & Stuie my friends. Congratulations!!
P.S. good job Shannon :))

Well done and congratulations Darryl. What a great joy it is to see your work so recognized. I have shared with you many times my views on your excellent work. You provide to the site not only stellar photography but excellent support and tutelage.

A well deserved honour and justly rewarded.

Equipment is one thing but it's useless unless you've seen the photo first. It's your minds eye that I admire...and your ability to capture it thereafter.

Thanks for your history and for the future we'll continue to enjoy.

Hello Darryl, first of all I must congratulate you for receiving a most well deserved honor!!! Your work has fascinated me, with a high level of interest, since I joined Caedes one year ago! You are a master of the camera Darryl in every sence of the word! Your gallery displays and demonstrates well your artful skillful ability, in infinite ways, to see through the lens, that which some of us haven't experienced as yet!! As I have said to you before, you have shown even mushroons to appear as lovely flowers, because this is your perception, hence portrayed! My hat is off to you!!! All of your hard work has been manifested in the most beautiful of photograpy and thank you Darryl! Pretty mushy, I would say, but that's ok, isn't it Darryl? Sincerely, Marilyn

It is great we have another accomplished AOTW. Congratulations on this well deserved nomination. It looks like you have found a passion for the rest of your life. I wish you many many good photos.
