AOTW # 6

Submitted by Samatar 12/11/05 10:29 PM GMT

Our featured artist this week is ppigeon. Pierre is one of caedes earliest members and hence has a large selection of excellent photographs in his gallery. If you haven't seen it yet then you're in for a treat! Congratulations Pierre and I hope everyone can make this a great week for him by leaving your comments, questions and suggestions on his images, profile or in this news item. Here is some personal information provided by ppigeon for all of us to enjoy.

Pierre: When I received Sam’s PM, my first thought was “Yeah!” But my second was “Ouch, I must write an English text for the presentation…!” People in the south of Belgium speak French, our northern neighbours speak Flemish (Dutch) and we stay just side by side with Germany. So at school we must learn, at first, the Dutch language, second English and third German. The result is that we can speak several languages but not very well…

I’m 50, married for 27 years with Françoise and we have three children (one girl of 25 and two boys of 23 and 21 years old). We stay in a beautiful valley. You can see some images of this valley in my gallery (type ‘Meuse’ in the search engine). My dad gave us the photo-virus while building us a darkroom with an enlarger. We passed many days developing our first photos on old American paper coming from WWII! After my studies, I bought a Canon AE1 and that was the real beginning. Some of my first pictures on the site where taken with it (A tree in winter, Beauty of Scotland, …). My second cam was a Nikon F70 + zoom Nikkor 28/200. Wonderful camera, but always argentic… (see Toward the Kilimanjaro or Waterlilies, …). Then I discovered the numeric with a Hewlett-Packard 715. I’m using now an excellent Minolta Dimage A2.

As you know, my wife and I are lucky enough to travel to many countries. Everywhere we went, we met nice and accessible people. Our visits to Peru and Namibia (especially to the Himba people) were some of the most beautiful moments in our life. I think we must give young people a chance to travel, to avoid too much nationalism.

I discovered the site in November 2002, looking after some wallpapers on the web. My first contacts with Caedes, Beowulf and Winternight… were immediately excellent. I also remember the first images uploaded by Darryl (Westwood lake) and the first comments like “Wow! Wonderful image!” :-D It’s very difficult for me to choose some artists on the site, but I must say that the images from Photoimagery really impress me. Since I’ve been addicted to caedes.net, I've learned a lot of things and all people around me think that my photos have improved. This is the great interest of a site like this one. Thank you for your indulgence and thanks to Sam for this marvellous idea. This is for me a nice Xmas gift :-) Merry Christmas to every one!

Congratulations, Pierre. Looking over your gallery, it's amazing how many of your photos I've downloaded into my wallpaper files. I love how your eye picks out the most extraordinary things, things that alot of people might pass by, and you make them incredibly beautiful. Of course, I'm referring to Snowland, a simple image of snow & shadows but so beautiful. And Perspectives, another image I have, & love. You really deserve this honor & I'm so pleased to see you receive it. Congratulations again, and Merry Christmas to you & your family !

It's hard for me to keep coming up with something fresh to write on your beautiful images when mostly I just sit back and stare. You've taken us many breathtaking places with you and shown us new ways to see them as in 'skimming the desert' and 'namib desert 9'. The simplicity of 'third guess' which you never renamed. but the images I like best are the way you interpret the sculpture and art exhibitions you visit. There's a perspective caught that I don't think would come across live as well as the way you've photographed them. 'Homage to a sculptor' and 'cursed spectra' are both a part of my favorites.

by the way, you have a lovely back yard

Congratulations Pierre, I am glad this time this honour was yours. Well deserved nomination. What can I say: your photos gave me lot of stimulation and inspiration to develop my skills. I am very grateful for this and for your supporting words on my images. I hope this will be very special week for you. But I hope you won't rest on your laurels. Therefore I would like to wish you new challenges in photography. I can't wait to visit your gallery.

Well deserved Pierre. Your images and partication on the site earned you this position of honour. I have always valued your comments on my work. It's rather like "if HE liked it, I should be encouraged to carry on.." And so you have been such an encouragement to many.

With 11 pages of images (!!) it would be difficult for me to select a favourite...suffice it to say your gallery is stunning and a great kindness that you share it with us all.

Congratulations Pierre.

Congratulations Pierre! I'm very happy to see you as AOTW and I really think you deserve this! (It was about time you got the honors. ;) ) You know I love your photographies in general and your friendliness and mature way to see things. :) I know I've not been commenting as much as I should on your work but I'm just a bit shy to comment if I have nothing new to offer that the 20 people before me haven't already said. ;)

You know how it can be. Time is limited and even if I try I can't make enough for me and my loved ones plus making all the comments I should. I'm even a bore when it comes to thank you for your many friendly words on my work. I'm in the habit of answering on the thread you left the comment in (when I have the time) and not saying thanks on your (or others) User Information page. Maybe I should change, but I find it so confusing to have a conversation in two places. ^_^

Having said that, I'll say something I believe I've said before some times but I'll repete it. It's thanks to your great photos that I stayed here on caedes.net in the first place. Tracy (camerahound) had given me the link here during a conversation on another site and I came here out of curiosity, but it was you that made me want to stay. :) All the great photos I found from your trip to exotic countries I had never been able to visit myself and all the other beautiful images you had in your gallery had me hooked straight up. Your kind words to me in the beginning of my stay here, made me want to be a part of this place too and submit my work and share my points of views on others work and I've continued to do.

My son is still growing and my school-work takes a lot of time from me now, but I still come here everyday. I've always tried to follow the lead you made in being kind to others and encourage the growth of artists but I guess I'm not as good as you in those things. I, like you don't speak english natively but for me I end up in expressing myself with too many words since I'm afraid of getting misunderstood, but I always manage to say things the wrong way anyhow. ^_^

Thanks for being such a nice guy and for the time you put into this site. I'm proud to think of you as a friend even if I don't know you that well I guess. I hope you know I have full respect for everything you do and hope you will forgive my shortcomings on some matters here on caedes. ;)

Hello Pierre..may I add my heartfelt congratulations to you for your honor this week! You were the very first artist I reached out to and asked for help. I wasn't sure what I wanted, but you gladly accepted the blind challenge & here I still am :)
Thank you for letting us know more about you. Your language works well for me. I think you are quite fluent in English~
When I read that you were selected, my mind began thinking of some of your images that have stood out for me over time. I think the most elegant was ~Male Swan~. That was on my desktop for a very long time. It depicts grace and elegance and class to me. The one that always put a smile on my face is ~Air Shafts?~ I think that is what the title is called. They look like people. That one also resided as a desktop for many days with lot's of comments from people who were in my office! When I joined Caedes.net, JM told me that "Pierre is a really nice person". He wasn't lying!
Enjoy your week of honor and glory and fame. You are deserving of it. Hope the leg is all better now. Thanks for all you do to help the site. Happy Holidays :~)

Congratulations Pierre. Since you were one of first artists I came into contact with when you still stand as the most well-established personality on the site. The quality and diversity of your gallery has always been and inspiration and a lesson to me.

When I traveled to Europe a couple of years ago and I was flying into Brussels, it was extremely cool to be able to write to someone I knew in Belgium (you) and ask about city transportation. I though to myself, "boy, am I well-connected or what?"

It is a joy to have your acquantance on this wonderful web community. I hope you have a Merry Christmas and I will keep you and yours in my prayers this Advent season. May God bless you now and always.

Best Regards! =)

Hello my friend! Pierre..your snow scenes were the first thing I loved when I joined caedes. I sat at my computer and dazed into those photos..My most favorite photo(if thats possible) is An Alpine Village followed by Winters Coming and Virgin Landscape and oh that wonderful Playing with the Light...well, its an endless list. Your travels are something I could only dream of doing...When I saw the photo called Shyness..my heart went into that little girl. Such innocent beauty and you captured it tenderly. Well, I could go on and on...the desert photos were amazing..so were the foods and flowers you showed...All I can say is that you are a very fortunate man to see these things and then to be able to reap the rewards not only of your own photos but the fact that others could see the world thru your eyes.
I am thankful you have come thru your tragic accident...and that you are once again able to enjoy natures gifts..Pierre, you are a very special person, you are helpful to us all, we learn from you, your kindness speaks thru your words, and even tho you think you cannot speak or write English good enough...you do wonderfully.
At one point I was going to leave caedes and you encouraged me to wait a bit longer and see how things would work out..and you were right..I stayed, and they began working out very well, and I have never regretted not leaving. I feel so at home here, and have made such wonderful friends..
I have also loved how many of your photos reminded me of my childhood in Germany and England...you touched my heart with those. You know I love that photo you took of all the colourful fans...so very very pretty !!So many times I felt that I were with you, holding your hand, as you showed me the world !! I thank you Pierre, so very very much, for the many things you have added to my life..and by the way...The only thing missing is your teaching me to speak French...so I can write romantic poetry!!...How could anyone resist a "Frenchman"...mmmhhhh YOU are definitely the cre'me de la cre'me my friend!!!!

Your work and your comments encouraged me early in my (extremely brief) photographic career, and your artwork has given me many of theideas I have incorporated into my own work. Cheers, my friend!

Nice to see you here Pierre. ;) Also happy to see you are out and about a bit more. Not only do I appreciate your photography (especially your people captures), but I ditto Klas' appreciation for you being such a kind addition to this site. Whenever I've needed anything and have chosen you to communicate with, you've given me respect, clear responses, and kind encouragement. That is invaluable to me and in my book, is the sign of true success, maturity, and a standard I feel matters more to this honor than solely being commended for superior photography. Enjoy your special week. ;)
